Transplantation of big trees
The ecology of such biggest megalopolis as our Moscow is, to put it mildly, much to be desired. Naturally, the individual dwelling construction is widely and successfully developing in Moscow suburbs. The splendor of several private residences and new cottage villages exceeds all conceivable ideas. The variety of architectural forms, the combination of super-modern and classic building materials, appliance of modern technologies in construction sometimes strikes the imagination of even experienced experts. But, in spite that, as usual, such villages are correctly planned and built, and their territory is improved - lawns, flower-beds, beautiful and comfortable footpaths, pools, alpine mountains and many other things from the various arsenal of landscape architects - the feeling of internal disharmony and of the artificiality of the landscape are mixed with the feeling of beauty. Step by step the reason can be understood: the wood from all sides surrounds the village, but often on its territory there is no single big tree. In the best - trees and bushes 2.0 - 2.5 m tall, which, alas, cannot be visually compared with a big house, which height is 10 and more meters. As a result, there is no feeling of natural and whole landscape. In general the problem is only in big trees. The planting of big size trees (ànd we speak about trees, which height is from 4 ì. tî 8-10 ì. with diameter of the crown of 2.0-3.0 ì.), is far not a new business. There are famous news-reel frames of 30-s, which show trucks, carrying to the capital trees of 6-8 and more meters height with a lump of ground, "packed" in especially made wooden box. Anyway, there are more early examples of fulfillment of such works, referring to the Government of Peter I. Since then, the scientific thought, banally speaking, has developed. Nowadays experts know methods of transplantation of big size trees almost in any time of the year. Substances are found and compositions are developed, which stimulate the growing of the root system, the decrease of transpiration activity of leafs (easy speaking, evaporation of moisture by leafs) etc., helping the tree to survive the crucial period of adaptation to a new place. Factors, hindering the adaptation, are well known and methods, eliminating such factors in the transplantation process, are developed. Anyway, in spite of scientific contrivances, there is risk when transplanting big size trees. But it decreases almost to zero, if big size trees are planted… in winter. Just our middle zone with its six months long winter gives enormous not used opportunities in this field.
Biologic peculiarities of plants of the Russian middle zone are such, that autumn causes the deceleration of vital activity processes. The plant gets the condition of a deep calm; it plunges into "dream". When it will "wake up" in spring in the new, correctly prepared place, it will turn green, enjoying you and astonishing skeptical neighbors. Speaking about technical peculiarities, it worth pointing out, that the process of transplantation of big size trees is rather labor consuming by itself. It is necessary to dig out the tree with a lump of ground, which contains from 80% tî 95% of the root system (2m õ 2m and more), for this purpose it is necessary to orientate well in species peculiarities of trees. Trees can be digged out only in nurseries, where they are being specially prepared since they have been born. When being load on a transport the lump of ground with roots should be reinforced, as if it freezes through the root system can be exposed and damaged. Our colleagues developed and successfully applied the original container technology, easing the loading and the transportation of trees, eliminating risk factors and making the planting more economical and cheaper for the customer. The price of transplantation of the big size tree depends on several factors: tree species, height and diameter of its crown, distance to the place of planting and method of preparing of a new place. The latter depends a lot on indirect conditions and reflects rather considerably on the root taking. For each special case experts make a calculation, taking all conditions into consideration. If the number of trees increases, works can be considerably mechanized; it can decrease the price of works. As we know, Moscow and its suburbs have problems with green planting. Only together we can in future change such situation in the capital and in highly populated centers of Moscow suburbs.
