Problems of improvement
of the country-seat with a wood plot
The wood plays an important role in man's life; it does not only give us esthetic satisfaction, but also has curative and prophylactic features against stresses and different diseases. It is not without reason that a big number of sanatoriums, boarding houses and rest homes are located just in the wood area. Quite recently wood plots started to be distributed for needs of the individual dwelling construction, as not everybody is delighted living on the 6 hundred square meters on the marsh with a ridge of radish. But after a while distributed plots became problematic: the wood got sick, ancient trees were dying, the needles became yellow and was falling, the annual growth was decreasing, same trees benched and è felt on already built constructions, causing material damage and threatening the life of owners.
Of course, owners did not suspect that the wood as well as any living creature needs care and intent attention of professionals. As a result, when they finally did address professionals it was already late to save many trees. They had to eliminate such trees already by means of the crane and of the alpine equipment by parts, in order not to do harm to buildings and to nearby trees, it has already been much more expensive than the maintenance of the wood from the very beginning of its mastering and caused the change of the landscape rather not to the best.
What changes take place in the wood in case of unskillful "maintenance" and attempts of improvement?
In order to answer this question in a more detailed way let's consider such notions as "biocenose" and "ecosystem".
Biocenose is a group of living organisms, united by the attraction of different environmental factors.
As characteristic features this group has a certain specific composition and mutual relations. The mutual relation of components is such, that amendments, referred only to one kind, can reflect on all the biocenose and even cause its decomposition.
Most ecosystems have been formed during a long-term evolution and are the result of adoption of species to the environment. Ecosystems are self-regulated and are able to confront to a certain point environmental changes.
Unfortunately if the individual dwelling construction is fulfilled in the wood, conditions can change so intensively, that some species living within the biocenose are not able to confront it.
First of all useful species dye or migrate (birds, insects, mushrooms etc.), after that pests and diseases as more stable ones reproduce and cause damage to remaining trees. Most damage is caused by trunk pests (sawyers, wood-corroders, cortex-eaters, corrosive tree-frogs, earth tree-frog etc.). It is difficult to fight them: first of all because of a hidden life-style (under the cortex and inside the trunk), secondly, because the plot owner does often even suspect their existence, and thirdly, in the weakened tree pests reproduce much more quicker, then in the healthy one, plus - total absence of natural enemies (woodpeckers and other birds, enthomofague insects etc.)
These pests should be fought with not occasionally, but in a systematic way since the beginning of mastering, guided and surveyed by professionals. The fight understands not only traditional sprinkling, but as well injections of special preparations under the cortex.
The wood is also affected by many diseases: mushroom diseases (honey agaric, polyporus, farinaceous dew, tetter, rust, cytosporosis, different spots, schutte, cancer etc.); viral and bacterial diseases. Mushroom diseases cause the most harm. A nice-looking honey agaric, which many of us like fried or pickled, is, in fact, an aggressive wood pest, which is able to make a slim giant into a rotten log within a short time.
Some kind of balance is always maintained in the ordinary wood, but when the wood is weakened, the trunk is damaged by technique, roots are cut off… On the whole, here also we cannot avoid the qualified assistance to the tree. Among other factors, reducing the life period of a tree, such should be mentioned: elimination of the undergrowth and of the needle deciduous rests with micros, consolidation of the soil by the technique, amendment of water regime, damage of roots without relevant measures ( for example, birch roots, are 17 and more meters away from the trunk), appearance in the sun such plants, which had been in shadow. For example very many pines and other trees were lost during the reconstruction of Moscow circular road.
When laying construction communications, excavator should not eliminate roots of big trees. Spilled Fuel and Lubricating Materials are mortal for all plants.
The impact of almost all these and other negative factors can be partially compensated by the cutting, by soil processing, by glazes, by additional fertilization, by processing with different preparations, anyway, it is difficult to provide 100% guarantee. Some trees should be eliminated from the plot already in the beginning of masters. These are wittingly sick and incurable trees, as well as old ones, even healthy trees (there can be only few of them), as we know, that each tree has its life period (60-80 year for a birch), after it gets sick and dies.
We should notice that the problem of wood maintenance, especially of needles ones, is not a new one at all. In the past century and in the beginning of a new one agronomists and engineers were puzzled by this problem. In many volumes of works of Schreder, Timiryazev, Michurin we can find articles, experiences and observations, persuading us, that this problem can be solved.
Here are writings of the eminent home expert in growing decorative trees and bushes I.P.Kovtunenko:
" Often withering and deformation of a needles tree in park or other plantations is caused by the oppression of nearby trees or bushes, which either too much shade it, or to take off nutritious substances and moisture from the soil. First of all these reasons should be eliminated: cut, transplanted, less valuable races should be completely eliminated, after relevant fertilizers should be put into the soil. If the considerable part of the crown dried or lost all the look, or is completely rare, it is necessary to cut off all the deformed part of the plant in order to cause the growing of new top sprouts to form a new crown. At the same time roots should be cut. When applying this method of the tree rejuvenation, the appearance of new, more active roots is stimulated, which at their turn assist fastest growing up of the renewed crown.
More soon we notice the deformation of the needles tree and eliminate its reasons, more better and quicker results can be expected. That's why needles plantings should be permanently controlled by experienced gardeners…"
There exist also other methods, known by professionals, about which I will not tell in details, some of them cannot be called other than "surgical interference" anyway, they keep the health and the life of your wood and save you money, shadow and coolness of the own wood!
Care about your wood now!
